Storing Electronics and Devices in a Self-Storage Unit? Keep Them Secure and Organised with These Tips

Whether you are storing electronics, furniture, clothes, sports equipment or any other item, there are important steps to take to organise your storage unit so that everything is safe and secure. If this sounds overwhelming because of the number of items being stored, hire a self-storage company to provide you with the best value for money. They will ensure that your storage unit is safe and sound.

Here are some tips for storing your electronics and devices in a self-storage unit

  1. Remove the power supply from all electronic devices, including consoles, TVs, DVD players, computer equipment etc. If possible, pack them up so that you can remove the items once they have been placed in storage. This will prevent any unnecessary damage to the equipment and will also save you money in the long run.

  2. If possible, store electronic equipment in its original packaging to protect it from dust and other contaminants that can cause damage or malfunctioning. If your storage facility does not provide plastic protective materials for individual items, place them inside a small bag
before they are placed in boxes so that they don’t get scratched or damaged.

  3. Keep track of all the serial numbers and receipts for electronic equipment that is being stored, in case there is a loss or theft. This will allow you to report the items that are missing quickly and easily. It is also a good idea to take photographs of all your electronic
equipment, just in case it becomes damaged during storage. Keep the photographs and serial numbers in a secure location, such as your home safe.

  4. Store all DVDs and CDs inside CD storage cases or DVD bags to protect them from dust and scratches that can damage the discs. As above, ensure that they are stored away from any contaminants. If you do not have these on hand already, it is a good idea to keep
them stored in a fairly airtight container so that they are not exposed to dust.

  5. Ensure that all electronic equipment is plugged into an outlet and turned off before it is placed into storage, as this will prevent damage or power surges during the storage period.

  6. Place all video games consoles and other electronic equipment which are plugged in, into surge protectors before being stored to prevent any power surges that could damage them.

  7. Store all digital cameras in self-storage units with antistatic bags to protect them from dust and other contaminants. These are fairly inexpensive items that will ensure that your camera remains clean, working and ready for use after storage is complete. If you cannot
find antistatic bags, simply place your camera inside a resealable bag that has holes cut out for the lens and charger.

  8. Before storing electronics with liquids in them or food that can attract insects, ensure that everything is completely dry. These items will need to be sealed inside airtight containers like Tupperware bottles to stop ants and other insects which can damage them and ruin
    the food.

  9. For added protection of videos, DVDs, CDs and other items which are stored in boxes, cover the bottom of the box with bubble wrap before placing the item inside. This will help protect it from damage or malfunction due to any sharp objects that may be in your
    storage unit.

  10. If you have expensive electronics such as TVs, DVD players etc, ensure that they are not placed in storage units where other people may have access to them. If possible, avoid renting a public self-storage facility and rent a unit that has an exclusive code or key which can only be accessed by you.

Preventing damage and theft of items is the main concern for anyone who has electronic equipment stored away. By following these simple tips, you can ensure that your electronic equipment is safely stored and emerges from storage in the same condition as it was before.
