MyGate Guides Merchants Around Potential e-Commerce Pitfalls

MyGate, one of Africa’s largest and fastest growing online payment gateway providers, has announced that it will be speaking at the E-Commerce Law & Regulations Seminar on 3rd June 2014 at Emperor’s Palace in Kempton Park, Johannesburg.

The eCommerce Law & Regulations Seminar is a one day seminar intended to educate organisations trading online on the latest industry regulations and how to protect themselves from current threats, such as liability and cybercrime. The seminar has included delegates from companies such as Mr. Price Group, Bid or Buy, Finchoice, Avis Rent-a-Car and JD Group in previous years.

Representatives from Deloitte, Bowman Gilfillan, ESET, UNISA, DMASA, Digital Legal, and MyGate will be addressing current topics such as e-commerce tax requirements, cross-border e-commerce VAT, the latest online threats, social media law, Protection of Personal Information (POPI), Consumer Rights, and compliance of South African eCommerce websites.

According to Mastercard’s Third Annual Online Shopping Survey, South Africans spent R 3.3 billion on the Internet in 2012. That number was expected to grow by 25% in 2013. The study also revealed that concerns about security were one of the biggest inhibitors to online shopping with 90% of respondents stating that secure payment facilities and convenient payment methods were the most important considerations when making an online purchase.

“E-commerce is full of commercial opportunities for growth for South African merchants,” says Llew Adamson, CTO of MyGate. “However, there are still many challenges and potential pitfalls merchants face when it comes to security. I will be speaking to attendees about these challenges and potential pitfalls, and the regulations that are being put in place to protect both them and consumers and to create a more secure trading environment.”

MyGate’s Adamson will be covering topics such as 3D secure, payment security across new channels such as mobile, tokenisation of payment information, and the impact of heart bleed during his presentation at the seminar.

“This speaking engagement at the E-Commerce Law & Regulations Seminar is part of our overall goal as a business to provide merchants with the secure payment processing options and expertise that enable them to accept more payments and sell more,” concludes Adamson.
