Durban, South Africa. September 21, 2021 - With all that South Africa, and in particular the province of KwaZulu-Natal, have been through this past year, DiDi’s arrival comes at the opportune time for those looking to embark in new entrepreneurship opportunities.

DiDi, the world's leading mobility platform is so much more than just another ride-hailing service. DiDi brings with it a wide range of safety features to benefit users and driving partners, including facial recognition for drivers, SOS buttons for riders and drivers linked to local police, 24/7 support via a dedicated safety hotline, preview information for riders and drivers, and safety training for drivers, among others.

While the Covid-19 global pandemic is still impacting the livelihood of many, not only globally but also in our own country, DiDi has set aside a R150 million COVID-19 relief fund for its drivers across the globe.

Bertina Tshabalala, Manager of DiDi SA driver centres says: “Drivers interact with a lot of passengers on a daily basis and so we have set aside R150 million to provide our drivers with PPE and sanitisers to ensure that they are protected.

“Furthermore, if a driver tests positive for COVID-19, this means that they will be able to take time off work to quarantine and recuperate without having to worry about not receiving an income, as DiDi provides them up to two weeks’ worth of their wages while they are off sick.”

DiDi SA has also committed R1.5 million worth of free trips to help get South Africans to and from vaccination sites in Gauteng, Cape Town, Gqeberha and soon KwaZulu-Natal, creating even greater demand and opportunity for our driver partners. Vouchers for return trips will be live on the app as a different product line from 27 September and users can register for a vaccination voucher here:

Drivers who are looking to become partners in Durban are encouraged to sign up and take advantage of the entrepreneurial benefits of joining DiDi’s mobility platform. This includes a 0% take rate for the first four weeks if you sign up and have all documentation approved before the launch date, plus a R250 sign-up bonus when you sign up before the launch date and complete tentrips within the first week of the launch. Other benefits include up to R15 000 for driver and rider referrals (up to R300 each). DiDi also offers its driver-partners a competitive 13% commission fee which is much lower than that of its competitors.

Another one of DiDi’s key differentiators is that its drivers are able to see their destination before accepting a trip. This means that drivers have greater control of their own safety while driving. While the brand recognises that there may be some downside to this for riders taking shorter trips, the DiDi team run extensive education programs that enable drivers to use these tools in the best way possible. Tshabalala once again comments that their strong operations team in South Africa is continually monitoring the experience on the platform in order to maintain its standards and really serve their users. ‘’So far, we've seen drivers make good use of the tool and understand that with DiDi's commission being one of the best in the market, even short trips are opportunities for better earnings.‘’

In closing, Tshabalala notes that ‘’DiDi continues to strengthen its commitment to economic empowerment. As a brand our agenda is to not only create safer and more efficient transport in the country but to also uplift and empower the communities in which we operate.’’
