AFRISAM’S DELPORTSHOOP BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT CETNRE TO CREATE A FUTURE OF POSSIBILITIES FOR LOCAL SMMEs

Submitted by: Themba

23 March 2018, Delportshoop - South Africa’s leading construction material supplier, AfriSam, is pushing forward with its efforts to empower small to medium businesses in communities surrounding its Ulco mine in the Northern Cape.

AfriSam today launched the Delportshoop Business Development Centre as part of its Enterprise Development Programme.   Through this programme, the company identifies black-owned Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) close to the company’s operations and provide these qualifying entrepreneurs with the necessary support and development for them to grow their business and ultimately be included in AfriSam’s database of registered vendors.

The Delportshoop Business Centre was today officially handed over to Dikgatlong Local Municipality by the MEC for Economic Development in the Northern Cape Province, Honourable MacCollen Jack.

The centre houses 7 offices, a boardroom, kitchen and a 100-seater hall and has been established to serve the local SMME Community in terms of skills development in order for them to participate in the local economy.

Barry Nkomo, AfriSam’s Ulco Enterprise and Supplier Development Professional says the centre will make office space available to local SMMEs which will be utilised for their day-to-day operations. It will assist the local SMMEs to develop their skills in general business administration. The SMMEs will be accommodated for a maximum period of 2 years, renewable depending on the growth of their businesses to enable intake of other SMMEs,” says Nkomo.

“AfriSam is committed to uplifting local communities where it operates, and this is a responsibility that we embrace with both hands. Through this Enterprise Development Programme, AfriSam provides training and development to qualifying entrepreneurs which helps them to grow their businesses and in turn generate sustainable income and create jobs.

An immediate benefit of this new centre will be supporting SMMEs who will benefit through a mentorship programme and other services such as development of business profiles, business plans and access to business opportunities.  AfriSam has a similar SMME Business Development Centre in Roodepoort which was opened in 2014.

To date, AfriSam’s Enterprise Development team has held SMME campaigns and open days with communities around the company’s Lichtenburg, Roodekrans, Roodepoort and Eikenhof operations.
